This modest home on the McKenzie River needed a new back deck, and that was an opportunity to tackle another problem: The house lacked a front door on the driveway side, and guests had no clear way to arrive and announce themselves. We designed a more intuitive entry, through a gate at the front, along a gravel path and boardwalk down the side of the house, emerging finally through another portal onto a striking timber-framed outdoor room. This new deck is partially covered with translucent bronze-tinted panels that allow light in, but prevent a greenhouse effect. The deck edge is curved to mimic the view of the lake, and the low railing allows an unobstructed view of the water.
